Office hours at Davis Real Estate are by appointment. Even though you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at some of the large buildings being occupied by some large, old-fashioned real estate brokerages, the days of brick-and-mortar real estate companies are dwindling. In the 1960’s, agents used to sit in the office and wait for a customer to walk in–or perhaps call on the office phone. A little invention called a pager became common in the 1970’s and changed all of that. Back then, pagers didn’t have displays, so when yours beeped or vibrated, you would have to stop at a pay phone (remember those?) and spend a dime to call the office. If the office hadn’t paged you, it cost another dime to call home and check there. Of course, those soon gave way to displays which showed the number you were supposed to call. Some fancy ones would even announce a short recorded message. The 1980’s brought widespread use of the cellular phone to the real estate industry. It was analog and bolted to your car, so you needed to talk loudly and be within sprinting distance of your car at all times. It was considered a luxury to have your car horn announce incoming calls with a honk if you stepped away! My how things have changed!
Now that agents are reachable virtually around the clock, it makes you wonder what the heck they are doing in those massive buildings, doesn’t it?
